Focus On What Matters: Nashville Wins

by Josh on March 22, 2010

Seems everyone around here is talking politics recently. Specifically Healthcare Reform, Economy, the Housing Market etc and so forth. People are worried about this and that, whether they are taxed too much or make too little money or whether the government is giving handouts.

I will be the first to tell you… nothing. I keep my opinions to myself because I have one overarching philosophy that trumps all of those concerns. Here it is in a nutshell:

“There are so many things out there that I cannot control. If I allow the things I cannot control to control me, I lose. However, there are many things that I can control, like how hard I work, how much I love, and how many people I serve. If I take control of those things and do them to the best of my ability, I win. Life is too short to worry about everything. Be your best and don’t sweat the rest.”

I am continually inspired by businesses I see doing just that. From small coffee houses like Frothy Monkey to huge publishers like Thomas Nelson, leaders guide their business through the quagmire of uncertainty into the forefront of their field by focusing on the things they can control. They have a great product that is of value to consumers. That’s precisely how I strive to run my business as well. Even in a time where everyone is pinching pennies, we all still spend money. We just want our money to be well spent on things that are valuable.

So Nashville, whatever it is, do your best with the things you can control. Nashville WILL be a better place if we all do our part. The choice is ours.
